Orlando Child Support Attorney

How Much Does Child Support Cost In Florida?

The court determines child support amounts using a statewide formula that considers each parent's annual income and the number of children to be supported. Nix Law, P.A., will be able to help you estimate the amount of money that you may have to pay or that you will receive each month.

Other Factors That Influence Child Support Obligations

While you can use the formula outlined by the state to estimate the amount of money that you may have to pay in child support, there are other factors that can influence the amount of support as well, such as:

  • Special medical needs
  • Dental costs
  • Education expenses
  • Any other extra or recurring expenses that the child requires

It is up to the discretion of the Florida courts to determine the amount of child support, as well as determine which parent will pay child support.

Modifications

With the turbulent job market in today's economy, there is a good chance that many of us will be affected by layoffs or other financial hardships. If you are paying child support and lose a job, are laid off, etc., unless you petition to modify the agreement, you will accrue back payments.

Verbal agreements offer little protection. While it may seem reasonable and friendly at the time, a verbal agreement is a recipe for later regret when it comes to adjusting child support payments to your present circumstances.

The sooner you have your attorney file a motion to adjust your obligation, the better. Until the adjustment is made, continue to make your payments. The adjustment can be made retroactive.

The Worst Thing You Can Do: Nothing At All

When you are struggling to pay child support, call us to file for a modification. If you are found in contempt of court for failure to pay child support, your driver's license and all professional licenses issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulations can be suspended. Nix Law, P.A., can help you contest a suspension and request a hearing if you receive such a notice.
