What child support covers in Florida

While child care does cover basic items, it may also be used to go above and beyond those needs. For instance, it may be possible for child support to cover uninsured medical expenses or to pay for a child's insurance policy. Child support may also cover educational needs such as paying for a tutor or for tuition if the child is in private school.

Most courts agree that children are entitled to basic entertainment. Therefore, noncustodial parents may be asked to pay for trips to amusement parks or for a computer with a basic Internet connection. A computer may also be considered a basic educational expense for the child. In the event that the custodial parent is unable to watch the child, a noncustodial parent may be required to pay for childcare costs such as a babysitter or day care.

Noncustodial parents may be asked to pay for some or all of a child's extracurricular expenses. These activities may include playing on a school sports team or going to a summer camp. Dues and fees required to take part in a school club or a club that is not associated with the child's school may also be covered in a child support payment.

Those who are looking for help paying for their child's expenses after a divorce may ask for child support. Both parents are required to contribute to their child's development. It may be beneficial to consult with an attorney who has experience in family law matters prior to asking for a child support order, as courts typically follow state guidelines in determining the amount and duration.
