Simon Cowell is going to be a dad. But the man behind "The X Factor" entertainment competition series has let it be known that he won't be stepping into paternity status whole hog.
The child is reportedly the first sired by the 54-year-old Cowell. The mom-to-be is Lauren Silverman. It's not clear when she is due, but media outlets say that before the baby is born, Cowell and Silverman plan to marry. But before that can happen, she needs to finalize a divorce from her current husband.
In one recent interview, Cowell acknowledged that the prospect of fatherhood has definitely changed him. For one thing, he says, he never expected to be a dad. And in the face of the reality of it, he says told E! News that he obviously won't let the child be born without a proper father.
Still, Cowell has doesn’t appear ready to be the dad that some might expect by tradition. He reportedly told fans by way of Us Weekly that he has absolutely no intention of changing diapers. And as for middle-of-the-night feedings, Cowell suggests that's what nannies are for.
Considering the wealth and security that Cowell enjoys, it may not be surprising that he feels able to frame the role he intends to take. Very often, fatherhood comes unexpectedly out of wedlock. Sometimes, divorce throws up hurdles for fathers, making it hard for them to be as involved as they want to be in the lives of their children.
Where paternity rights are sought, however, the desires of the father deserve to be fought for.
