In addition to those matters, there was also a robbery complaint levied against him in Newark, but no charges had been filed in that case. Parents who fail to pay child support could face a variety of consequences. In some cases, a parent may be given time to pay any back child support owed. However, it is possible that an individual could face jail time until payments are considered current. Those who are having trouble making payments on their own may have their wages garnished or have tax refunds seized.
Those who are behind in their payments may be able to ask for a child support modification from a judge. However, any child support that is due before the order is modified will still be owed, and in most cases the delinquent parent will have to demonstrate a change in financial circumstances. It may be advisable to obtain the assistance a family law attorney to help with child support issues. An attorney may be able to help obtain a modification order or try to work out an arrangement that will bring a parent back to current on child support obligations. If an agreement can be reached, it may allow an individual to stay out of jail or avoid some or all other potential penalties.
