Potential issues with the child support system

Child support collection was first established in 1975, and it was designed to collect court-ordered child support that hadn't been paid. Although the current and previous system work on the same principle, the circumstances for parents and children today in Florida and across the nation are very different from when the collection system was created.

In 1975, the majority of children were born of parents who were married, and the goal of child support was to put children in a position that was as close to that of the nuclear family. This involved helping to ensure that divorced mothers, who were at the time very likely to end up in poverty, had the resources they needed to raise children from the father.

In contrast, today it is not uncommon for the parents of children to never have even lived together, much less been married. Additionally, while fathers in the 1970s were more likely to have improved finances following a divorce, many fathers today lack the resources to even pay baseline child support. In some states, hundreds of dollars of child support payments per month may be ordered, even if a father has no form of income.

Child support is something that is frequently essential to individuals who are raising children on their own. However, it's important that child support requirements can be met by the person responsible for paying them. If child support requirements exceed someone's ability to pay, it could result in this person being put in jail, further limiting their ability to meet their obligations. A lawyer might be able to assist someone seeking a child support modification.
