Men and child support in Florida

If a mother is the primary caregiver to a child after a divorce, the father may be required by the court to pay child support. However, if the father is the child's primary caregiver, should he be allowed to ask for child support? There are a wide range of opinions on the issue. Some believe that true equality means that everyone is treated equally regardless of their gender.

Increasingly, women are working and becoming the breadwinners for their families. Therefore, it is logical to assume that they should be held to the same standard as men when it comes to paying child support. This may be a step toward making both parents equal partners when it comes to raising their children.

One man who started offering a course teaching dads how to style their daughter's hair said that it wasn't right to ask for support. In his mind, a man should work harder if he needs more money. Instead of money, the other parent should be required to contribute their time to avoid the child turning into a financial weapon. In some cases, a parent doesn't have the option to decline child support if he or she asks for public assistance.

If a man wins custody of his children, he is allowed to seek a child support order to help raise them. The law does not take gender into account when determining how much support a father could receive from the mother. If an order already exists, an attorney may help a father compel the mother to abide by it. Legal counsel may also help a father pursue a child support order order modification if his financial situation has adversely changed due to circumstances beyond his control.
