Florida fans of actor Charlie Sheen may know that he has two daughters by Denise Richards and two sons by Brooke Mueller. Now, the two mothers have joined to try to get the amount of child support Sheen pays them increased.
Sheen's payments were reduced to $10,000 per month from $55,000 after he said that because of lawsuits, HIV treatments and being fired from the TV show "Two and a Half Men" he could no longer pay that amount. However, Mueller thinks that he is simply spending the money irresponsibly and that he has hidden money in offshore accounts. Richards says that he has not paid child support for several years.
The two are working with a business manager and have also spoken with a child psychologist who treated their children. One child in particular reportedly needed a great deal of counseling. Their aim is to demonstrate that basic expenses are not being paid by Sheen.
A father may want to have the assistance of a family law attorney when filing a motion for a child support modification if there are extenuating circumstances such as a job loss or an unexpected medical emergency that make it impossible to pay the ordered amount. It is important to realize that if granted, the modification will be prospective only, and it will have no effect on any payments that are in arrears. Accordingly, it is important that the motion be filed as soon as possible, as the penalties for non-payment can be quite severe, including levies on bank accounts and suspension of professional licenses.
