Child support initiatives can improve payment efforts

A Florida parent who owes child support can be faced with financial challenges in the event of being fired or suffering serious health problems. Typically, the support payments don't stop because of these types of situations without the involvement of a court. As unpaid support mounts, it can become overwhelming. In many cases, the parents who tend to be labeled as deadbeats are actually challenged by adverse financial situations that make compliance difficult or impossible.

Sherri Shepherd must pay child support

Florida parents who are going through a divorce may be interested to learn that actor Sherri Shepherd was ordered to pay child support for a son born to a surrogate mother. Although Shepherd and the child have no DNA ties, courts in Pennsylvania deemed her the boy's legal mother in 2015 and ordered her to pay support. Her appeal was denied by both an appellate court in November 2015 and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in early March 2016.

Child support and tax considerations

In the United States in 2013, parents owed a combined $32.9 billion in child support according to the U.S Census Bureau. A total of $22.5 billion was collected, and those payments are not taxable to the recipients. Parents in Florida and around the country who make child support payments are not entitled to take a tax deduction.

Child support statistics

As divorce grows more and more common in Florida and other states, more parents are being ordered to pay child support to the custodial parent. A study by the Department of Agriculture found that the costs of raising a child to adulthood in the United States amount to nearly $250,000.

Men and child support in Florida

If a mother is the primary caregiver to a child after a divorce, the father may be required by the court to pay child support. However, if the father is the child's primary caregiver, should he be allowed to ask for child support? There are a wide range of opinions on the issue. Some believe that true equality means that everyone is treated equally regardless of their gender.

Potential issues with the child support system

Child support collection was first established in 1975, and it was designed to collect court-ordered child support that hadn't been paid. Although the current and previous system work on the same principle, the circumstances for parents and children today in Florida and across the nation are very different from when the collection system was created.

DMX laughs off paternity suit against another man for his child

In a twist that might interest some Florida residents, rapper DMX joked about another man whose name is also Earl Simmons receiving an order for paternity testing from the child's mother. DMX, who recently served a prison sentence for failing to pay child support in a separate child support case, said he is in no great hurry to clear up the current matter.

Modifying child support

There may be parents in Florida who can benefit from understanding more about the jurisdictional requirements for modifying an existing child support order. The economic status of either spouse can change significantly by the time a divorce proceeding is finalized. Child support orders based on outdated information may be debilitating for anyone who has suffered a financial downturn. However, filing in the appropriate state with the jurisdiction to modify an existing order may be the most crucial issue at hand.
